Training Pants versus Diapers
Have you ever heard the saying “Looks like a duck, Quacks like a duck, Must be a duck.
I do not care what you call them; cloth with a plastic outer lining and absorbent material in the middle that sits on the child's bottom is a diaper. You might call it big boy underwear, you might call it training pants, and you might want to even call it training underwear. No matter what you decide you want to call it, in my book it is still a diaper.
When you start potty training, my number one rule is no diapers during the waking hours. Diapers create a false sense of security for the child. They think it is okay to soil their diaper.
As the parent, you want to make sure that you are not using diapers on your child during the waking moments. It is important to realize that wearing diapers tells the child that it is okay to use the diaper to soil it.
In addition to that, the diaper makes it easier for you, the parent, as well.
The goal of not wearing diapers is to make you vigilant about paying more attention.
So, the first thing you want to do when it comes to potty training is get rid of the training pants, and the diapers.
Take your child to a store like a Wal-Mart and have them go into the underwear department and pick out the underwear they want to use. They may pick a Spiderman, Sponge Bob, Batman and Robin or some cartoon character that they really like, but let them pick the underwear that they want. This lets them come home and feel, like, I am a big boy/girl.
Let wearing their underwear be a reward for staying dry.
