Potty Training the Parents
Potty training is not just the act of training your child to use the potty. Truth of the matter is, potty training is just as much a lesson on potty training the parents on what to do as well as potty training a child.
Most parents, when starting the potty training process, put all the pressure on the child. In other words, their mentality is it's the child's job to be potty trained.
They ask questions “Why aren't you potty trained?” “Why are you having accidents on the floor?”
The ownership falls on the child.
The truth of the matter is the parent has just as much responsibility in potty training as the child does.
I believe it is the parent's job to make sure the child avoids having accidents. The parent has to make sure the child is effectively learning how to go on the potty consistently.
What do I mean by this?
The potty training process is complex. It is a series of repetitious actions that you do over a few days that eventually the child learns. As a parent, you need to know and understand what these actions are so you can repeat them consistently so that the child learns them.
In addition, the parent has to know how to watch for signs that the child is going to use the bathroom so the parent becomes well aware of the child's behaviors.
Once the parent understands these behaviors, the parent knows when to take the child to the bathroom to avoid accidents.
Besides just being physically aware of the child, the parent also has to know and understand his or her own mental state. When the parent is not in the right frame of mind, it is very difficult for them to administer potty training techniques.
Potty training can be a frustrating time, but the parent has to learn how to control their own emotions and temper so that potty training is not frustrating.
Your child will drive you crazy at times, but as a parent it is your job to be able to control how you handle those emotions.
So as a parent, do your job to be prepared for potty training so that you are able to do a good job.
