Did they forget that someday your new child would need to stop wearing diapers.  Maybe they just envisioned your child walking across their college graduation stage with a diploma in one hand, cap and gown in the other and a nice pair of size 32 Pampers on their bottom.  Or maybe they figured after you've gone through your 500th box of wipes that Whamo...the knowledge would automatically get in your head.  Sorry to tell you, but things just don't work like that.

Let's look at your current options
and why they don't work
 

1.	Go to the library and pick up some books. This is not the most productive use of your time.  I know because I've done it.  The only thing I found at the library were books with lots of pictures. I don't how know they could help me.  All the books were designed for the kids in mind.  Very few were written for the parents as a guide to potty training.  I learned more things reading detergent box on laundry day. (sad, but true fact)
2.	Ask your friends and family for help. Your friends and family are always there to give you advice, even when you don't want it.  When it comes to potty training, they will line up at the door to tell you what you should do. Chances are they are using the same old techniques from years ago that really don't work.  It's like having a mechanic tell you what to do about the pain in your leg because he had the same pain the year before.  Advice is good...just be careful who's giving it.
3.	Ask your daycare provider. You'll get better luck here, but not always.  Most daycares are too busy taking care of a dozen other kids to spend time mastering the skills of potty training.  They might learn enough to get by.  It takes a special person to learn these skills and be able to teach others.  As much as a daycare provider cares for your child, their number one priority is safety, not potty training.
4.	Your doctor. Doctors are wonderful and we need them.  But doctors today are much different then a few short years ago.  Can you relate to this next story? On my last visit to our pediatrician, we were in and out of the office faster then a tornado sweeping through the flat lands of Texas. It happened so fast all I caught was a glimpse of light reflecting off his stethoscope as he said "hi, bye, he's taller this year, here's my bill, have a nice day... or at least that's how it seemed to me. When did they become so fast?  Maybe Doctor visits should be an Olympic sport. Doctors don't spend that much time with patients any more. So there's no way they will help you potty train.
5.	Get videos from the library. Potty training videos are good to have around the house. They do help in introducing the potty to your child. Just like potty books they have more entertainment value than education value. The videos I found gave my sons more songs to sing than it taught him about going to the potty. What I really needed was something to help me. To make things worse my son became so addicted to the songs on the potty training video that he would not leave us alone about them As a matter of fact, he could not even say video.  He would ask for the potty train vidido.  When he didn't get the video, watch out.  We paid for it by way of a tantrum.
6.	Talk to a child psychologist. It's assumed because they are psychologist, they are always right.  The truth is, psychologist spend their time studying a few kids in a laboratory and then try to tell you, the parent, what to do.  I am sure you can gather good information from their data, but how realistic is it in your day to day life. I mean...think about it for a second.  Watching a child in a lab for a few hours is very different than the frustration of having to clean a child in a mall after an accident. Forget about the embarrassment  It's not the same as having to wake up at 2 am to take your son/daughter to the bathroom.  It's not the same when you are spending almost $100/month on diapers and wipes.  It's certainly not the same when your house smells of dirty diapers and you are embarrassed to have friends over. Or worse, you don't even notice the smell anymore and its your friends that ask "what is that smell"? What psychologists do is equivalent to when a person is hired off the street to be your new boss.  He/She might be a great leader, but has never worked a day doing the same job you do...and now they are trying to tell you how to do your job faster to get more done.  You think to yourself "How unrealistic.  They have never done this work yet they are trying to tell me how to do it". Sitting in a lab and making decisions is very easy, especially when you don't have to deal with the emotions, frustrations, hard work and embarrassments from accidents that come with potty training.

The potty training process is a natural progression in your child's development.  Don't think for one second that you are doing something wrong or that you are not a good parent because your child has an accident.

By the time you're done, you don't want to go anymore.  When your child is potty trained, all you have to do is get them dressed and walk out the door without having to pack a diaper bag or backup clothing.

	Take a break - You see whenever our family went out together, The responsibility of taking the kids to the bathroom fell on my shoulder.  It wasn't that my husband didn't want to take them, but most men's bathrooms didn't have changing tables. After my kids were potty trained, it didn't matter who took them to the bathroom.  When my husband took them I was able to get a nice break.
	House odor - After a while you stop noticing the embarrassing odor of dirty diapers that take over the house.  For me it was extremely embarrassing to have friends over.  I actually had one friend who asked me "what that smell was"?  I asked her "what smell"?
